🌿 Our Culture

Culture is the heartbeat of Lelu. Traditional practices—such as weaving, carving, cooking, farming, fishing, dancing, and singing—remain central to our identity, while modern education and innovation continue to shape our future.

One of the cultural skills that carries our identity is fafa making, a practice that carries deep ceremonial weight. This dish is not an everyday food but one reserved for the most important occasions — weddings, funerals, and community gatherings where respect and tradition must be honored.

Canoe making is a skilled craft passed down through generations. Builders select strong, lightweight wood and shape it with hand tools. The hull is carved to balance speed and stability on the ocean. Outriggers are added for support against waves. Each canoe reflects both utility and artistry, essential for fishing and travel.

Weaving uses natural materials like coconut or pandanus leaves. Strips are softened, dried, and prepared for patterns. The weaver interlaces them to form mats, baskets, or decorative items. Designs often symbolize family, clan, or tradition. It is both a practical skill and a cultural expression of identity.

Farming involves cultivating staple crops such as taro, yam, and banana. Farmers prepare plots with careful spacing and soil management. Planting follows traditional cycles tied to seasons and community needs. Harvesting is often communal, reinforcing cooperation. Farming sustains families and connects them to ancestral land.

Fishing is vital for food and livelihood. Techniques range from net casting to line fishing and reef traps. Canoes are used to reach deeper waters. Knowledge of tides, currents, and fish behavior guides success. Fishing also carries cultural rituals, linking people to the sea.

Dancing and singing are central to celebrations and ceremonies. Movements often mimic nature, daily life, or historical stories. Songs are performed in groups, blending voices in harmony. Drums and instruments accompany the rhythm. Together, they preserve tradition and strengthen community bonds.
