TUK FAFA FESTIVAL Celebrates Kosraean Culture and Youth Tradition
The Lelu Youth Council proudly announces the upcoming TUK FAFA FESTIVAL – Night Market, scheduled to take place on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Yaat, Lelu, from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. The event will celebrate Kosraean culture, traditional knowledge, and community unity by bringing together families, youths, performers, local vendors, and community members for an evening filled with cultural pride, island music, traditional food, and heritage performances.
One of the major highlights of the festival will be the live Tuk Fafa (Fafa Pounding) demonstration, showcasing one of Kosrae’s important traditional food preparation practices. The demonstration will provide younger generations and visitors an opportunity to witness and appreciate the cultural significance of preparing Fafa in the traditional Kosraean way.
The festival will also feature a variety of traditional and cultural dance performances by Lelu youths and local schools. Among the most meaningful performances of the evening will be the revival of the traditional Kosraean men’s stick dance known as “Sra, Lo, Tol.” Through rhythmic stick movements, synchronized chanting, and coordinated performance, the youths will demonstrate the strength, unity, and cultural identity represented by this historic Kosraean dance tradition.
The return of “Sra, Lo, Tol” symbolizes the growing efforts by young people in Lelu to preserve and revitalize traditional practices for future generations. Community members are encouraged to support and celebrate local youths as they embrace and perform cultural traditions that reflect the identity and heritage of Kosrae.
In addition to cultural performances, the night market will feature local food vendors, handicrafts, island music, and family-friendly activities that will create a vibrant atmosphere for the entire community.
The TUK FAFA FESTIVAL also serves as part of Lelu Municipality’s preparation for the upcoming Micronesia Expo in Pohnpei, showcasing the community’s commitment to promoting culture, tourism, and youth engagement.
Through events such as the TUK FAFA FESTIVAL, the Lelu Youth Council continues to encourage cultural preservation while empowering young people to carry forward the traditions and spirit of Kosrae.
“Our Culture. Our Community. Our Future.”
